Waqrapukara is an enigmatic archaeological site standing at the top of the mountain next to Apurimac Canyon, and it offers a breathtaking view of the landscape surrounded by mountains, cliff and canyons. Its location helps to preserve its different buildings and natural horn-shaped formation. Nowadays, we have different tours that allow all visitors to explore this natural beauty.
This enigmatic Inca fortress is located three hours away from the city of Cusco in Acomayo province, next to Apurimac Canyon in the Cusco region.
Of course! There is also a two-day tour to visit this Inca fortress from Cusco, which will allow you to explore better and wake up with a stunning view of this Inca site itself and the canyon. The campsite is just in front of the Inca site.
The best time to visit Waqrapukara is during the dry season in Cusco, which typically runs from May to October. During this season, you will have more chance to see the entire landscape and visit more sites of this wonderful ancient site.
This trip is quite challenging, from the bus ride to the 3-hour round-trip walk, making this a tour where you have to prepare very well. However, the view you will get is beyond compare. This is unique and impressive.
The altitude of Waqrapukara 4,140 meters(13,651 ft) above sea level
Yes, you definitely will need it. Even if you are in good shape, we recommend taking a few days in Cusco before heading to this tour, as most of the hike will be at 4,000 meters.
Definitely, it is always recommended to wear light hiking boots if possible. However, for our traditional day tours, where you do not need to hike for hours, you can go with sneakers. On Waqrapuka, Seven Lakes, Rainbow Mountain and Humantay Lake tours, you need ones with ankle support, which are extra helpful, especially for the inexperienced hiker. Because you will be climbing and going down slippery stairs, some of which could be muddy, uneven, and at varying heights, the extra support helps prevent twisting your ankles.
Yes. Walking sticks are always helpful to trekkers, especially if is raining along the trek. Using walking sticks can help take the pressure off your knees while doing some portion of the trek. Plus they will help you get up the mountain as well.
Yes, you can go on your own to explore Waqrapukara; however, you need to have more time because there is no bus going directly to this Inca site or towards the closest town; you need to take local buses at different sections.
The weather in Cusco and parts of the Andes is unpredictable, even if the weather forecast says it’s sunny. We can’t trust it. It is an impossible question for us to answer. Historically, April through September is the dry season; November through February is the rainy season; and March and October are bridge months—a mixture of both. But the clouds have not followed these rules in the last few years. Prepare for sun and rain, no matter when you come.
