Well, this Rainbow Mountain Trek particularly challenging due the altitude and the terrain, We recommend to spend a few days in Cusco to acclimatize to the altitude before heading to this trek because the Rainbow Mountain is at 5036 m (16,522 ft).
The Rainbow Mountain is located at 5036 m (16,522 ft) and the hike will begin at 4,370 meters (14,357 feet)
The hike to this natural Rainbow Mountain is a 2,30-hour round-trip on a day tour. During the two-day tour, it will be about 14 hours, or 18km (11.1 miles).
You need at least two days in Cusco before heading to the Rainbow Mountain, which is located over 5,000 meters. Even if you have a good fitness level, you need a few days in Cusco to acclimate to the altitude.
We highly recommend visiting this Rainbow Mountain in May, because it is the end of the rainy season and starts the dry season. You can still see some green valleys around the Rainbow Mountain, and the weather is perfect. Other months are June, July, and August to explore this colored mountain. Even September could be good, but it is very cold in the morning and afternoon.
The Rainbow Mountain tour is on the bucket list of more Peruvian travelers. Its location over 5,036 meters makes it a very challenging hike in the Andes. We recommend hiking there after your Inca Trail trek because it will help you acclimate better to the altitude.
The Rainbow Mountain is one of the most visited tourist destinations after Machu Picchu in Peru. Everyday, around 2000 people go there, and in the last few years, it has become busy because the viewpoint is a small section where everybody wants to get there to take the classic photos. That is why Vidal Expeditions created the 2-day tour, which allows you to visit it before the crowds arrive.
The best time to visit Rainbow Mountain is early in the morning before the crowds arrive, from 7 to 9 a.m., and also in the afternoon once the large groups have already left; this is usually between 2-4 p.m. However, during our two-day tour, you will have two options to visit this iconic mountain: in the afternoon on the first day and in the morning on the second day.
If you have time and want to take time to explore with no rush, definitely the two-day trek to Rainbow Mountain is what you are looking for. This will allow you to visit this mountain early in the morning before the crowds arrive and enjoy the sunrise. You will also spend a night surrounded by incredible mountain views that are not something to see during the day tour.
We recommend taking a few days in Cusco to adjust to the altitude. Drinking plenty of water will benefit you a lot, and doing some cardio will also help you get better performance during this trek.
No worries, our guide and team are professionals, and they know how to solve this kind of problem. Your guide will have a first aid kit with some medications for these and an oxygen balloon in case you need it. Also, during our trips to Rainbow Mountain and Humantay Lake, there will be an extra emergency horse to take you to the best place where you can recover. Our team always has radio..
Definitely, it is always recommended to wear light hiking boots if possible. However, for our traditional day tours, where you do not need to hike for hours, you can go with sneakers. On the Rainbow Mountain and Humantay Lake tours, you need ones with ankle support, which are extra helpful, especially for the inexperienced hiker. Because you will be climbing and going down slippery stairs, some of which could be muddy, uneven, and at varying heights, the extra support helps prevent twisting your ankles.
Yes. Walking sticks are always helpful to trekkers, especially if it is raining along the trek. Using walking sticks can help take the pressure off your knees while doing some portions of the trek. Plus, they will help you get up the mountain as well.
Definitely, you will be amazed by the incredible natural colors and the surrounding landscapes, like the snowy mountains, lakes, wildlife, and many picturesque Andean communities.
The weather in Cusco and parts of the Andes is unpredictable, even if the weather forecast says it’s sunny. We can’t trust it. It is an impossible question for us to answer. Historically, April through September is the dry season; November through February is the rainy season; and March and October are bridge months—a mixture of both. But the clouds have not followed these rules in the last few years. Prepare for sun and rain, no matter when you come. As far as temperatures go, that is consistent throughout the year. Mornings and evenings are always cold. Make sure to bring a fleece jacket for the mornings and a down jacket for the evenings. Once the sun is up, you should be comfortable hiking in short sleeves. Long pants (for yoga or hiking) are encouraged to protect you from the cold
