Inca Trail Permit Information
The Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is one of the most coveted treks in the world, and one of the most regulated. The Peruvian government strictly limits the trail to 500 people per day, including trekkers, guides, porters, and staff. In practice, only around 200 trekker spots are available each day.
Permits are non-transferable, issued in your name, and linked to your passport number. They must be purchased through a licensed tour operator registered with SERNANP, you cannot buy them independently. Vidal Expeditions is fully certified to purchase and manage Inca Trail permits on behalf of our clients.
500 People Per Day — Maximum
SERNANP enforces a strict daily limit of 500 people on the Classic Inca Trail. Only around 200 of those are trekker spots, the rest are guides, porters and staff.
Passport Required — No Exceptions
Each permit is issued in your exact passport name and number. You must carry the same passport on the trail. No transfers or name changes are possible once issued.
Must Book Through a Licensed Operator
By law, all permits must be purchased through a SERNANP-registered tour operator. You cannot buy them at the trailhead, online, or independently.
Book 4–6 Months in Advance
For peak season (June–August), book 6 months ahead. For shoulder season (April–May, September), allow at least 3 – 4 months lead time.

Send Your Passport Details
Provide your full name exactly as it appears on your passport, your passport number, nationality, and date of birth. All details must be 100% accurate, errors cannot be corrected after the permit is purchased.

Pay the Deposit to Secure Your Permit
A deposit of $200 USD per person is required to purchase your permit through SERNANP. Once paid, your spot is confirmed. Permits are non-refundable and non-transferable.

No. Inca Trail permits can only be purchased through a licensed tour operator registered with SERNANP (Peru's national park authority). You cannot buy them independently, online directly, or at the trailhead. Vidal Expeditions is fully certified and handles all permit bookings for our clients.
You need a valid passport. The permit is issued in your name and linked to your exact passport number, nationality, and date of birth. You must carry the same passport on the trail. No changes or transfers are allowed once the permit is issued. Make sure to send us your details exactly as they appear on your passport. The government will allow a passport number update only if you provide both old and new passport copies.
Inca Trail permits issued by SERNANP are non-refundable and non-transferable. Once purchased in your name, they cannot be changed, transferred, or refunded. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance that covers trip cancellations due to illness or emergencies.
Yes. The Classic Inca Trail closes every February for annual maintenance and cleaning carried out by SERNANP. No permits are issued during this month. The trail officially reopens on March 1st. If you want to visit Machu Picchu in February, consider the Salkantay Trek, Inca Jungle Trail, or the train route — none of which require Inca Trail permits.
The best months are May through September during the dry season. June, July, and August offer the most reliable weather but are also the most crowded. April and September offer an excellent balance of good weather and fewer crowds. January, November, and December are wetter but offer a more private, lush experience at lower cost.
