The 2-Day Ausangate Trek is perfect for those looking to escape the more touristy routes in Cusco. This tour takes you on a 2 days trail (23 km) where you will admire snowy mountains and colorful lakes and spot native wildlife, as well as observe the everyday life of the local communities.

How challenging is the Ausangate Trek?<\/span><\/h2>\n

While the trek is not particularly difficult, the altitude can make it challenging. Hiking between 9 and 13 km per day (about 5-6 hours), the path starts at 4,600 meters and climbs to around 4,900 meters. Therefore, prior acclimation in Cusco is recommended. You should spend at least two days in Cusco city before the hike. During the hike, remember to walk at a slow pace and to take deep breaths, as it will help your body to get better adjusted to the altitude. Moreover, a moderate level of fitness is also recommended.<\/p>\n

The camping experience!<\/span><\/h3>\n

Spending nights in the Andes can be unpredictable. You could experience sunshine, rain, and hail all in one day, as we did. Therefore, being well prepared for any unexpected situation and having proper camping gear will help you to smoothly navigate the challenging weather conditions in this area.
\nWhen a storm started during our tour, the Vidal Expeditions<\/strong> team reacted quickly. They set up the campsite where we were having lunch. This was a relief, since we were supposed to keep hiking for an extra hour to reach the campsite. Despite the challenges, the campsite was stunning. We enjoyed the views of the snowy mountain at sunset, walked around the surrounding lake, and admired a full view of the Milky way.<\/p>\n

\nAll you need to bring is a sleeping bag for below-freezing temperatures and warm clothes to stay cozy at night. There is no better way to end the day than sitting outside your tent, sipping a hot drink while gazing at the stars.<\/p>\n

Day-by-day itinerary of Ausangate Trek 2 Days <\/span><\/h3>\n

Day 1: The Ausangate 7 lakes<\/span><\/h4>\n

The adventure begins early, with a 5 a.m. pick-up from your accommodation in Cusco. The starting point of the hike, Pacchanta village<\/strong>, is located about a 4-hour drive from Cusco. Once there you will have some time to get yourself sorted out, as well as to prepare the day pack you will carry during the hike. Remember that your main belongings will be packed and carried by the horses directly to the campsite.
\nDuring the first day you will visit the beautiful Ausangate 7 lakes<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/span>. Each lake has its own unique color and charm. Azulcocha, the first lake, is especially stunning, with the Ausangate peak in the background.<\/p>\n

Keep your eyes peeled for native wildlife along your path. While doing this trek it is common to spot alpacas, llamas, Vizcachas, and foxes, and if you are lucky, even an Andean puma.
\nAround 1 p.m., you\u2019ll stop for lunch in a scenic spot surrounded by mountains and lakes. For us, this also became our camping spot due to weather conditions that prevented us from hiking on the 1st day. It is a peaceful area where you can enjoy the sunset, as well as relax in tune with the silence of the Andes.<\/div>\n

Day 2: Hiking to the north face of the Apu Ausangate<\/span><\/h4>\n

Your second day begins with a warm cup of coca tea delivered to your tent. Coca leaves, traditionally used in the Andes, are a well-known medicine that helps to relieve the symptoms of altitude sickness. Such a treat.
\nAfter breakfast, the trek continues through frost-covered landscapes. If you are lucky, you might even spot a group of vicu\u00f1as, who live in areas over 4000 meters. Vicu\u00f1as are related to alpacas, but they can grow only in the wild. Therefore, the fabric made from Vicu\u00f1a wool is a scarce and expensive commodity.<\/p>\n

Ausangate Trek Highlights<\/span><\/h4>\n
One of the highlights of the second day is an optional 20-minute uphill hike to a 360-degree viewpoint. This viewpoint is one of the most impressive you\u2019ll encounter during the trek. You will have the chance to enjoy the views of the north face of the Apu Ausangate<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/span> as well as the very snowy south face of the Mountain Callangate. Moreover, the views from above of more than 4 lakes will leave you amazed. This is a perfect spot for a group picture.<\/div>\n

Once you done descending from the viewpoint, you\u2019ll begin the return journey to Pacchanta. On your way back you may encounter some locals walking along with their alpacas. In this area most of the families rely on farming and textile production.
\nAs your journey comes to an end, you will have the chance to treat yourself with a dip in the hot springs located at the starting point of the trek. Such a perfect way to relax yourself and contemplate for the last time the stunning views you enjoyed the last 2 days.<\/p>\n
